growing folds
“growing folds” is a lighting object from the series “Echoes on a Luminous Base”, an initiative by Robert Wettstein. For this project, designers were invited to create their own lampshades for a lamp fitting he developed.
The porcelain shade was formed from felted human hair, which, during the making process, grows downwards along the lamp fitting. During firing, the hair burns away completely, leaving behind fine cavities and channels within the porcelain.
As porcelain is naturally highly translucent, these burnt-out structures significantly enhance the passage of light: areas with denser hair appear more compact when illuminated, while more lightly felted zones become particularly sheer and glowing. When the shade is lit from within, these variations become clearly visible.
The lamp fitting was specially produced by Schätti AG using a 3D-printing process with recycled powder. The energy-efficient LED bulb with GU10 base can be easily replaced when needed.
